I searched for a good breakfast restaurant in Old Folsom and found Karen's Bakery. I'd never been there before. There was a line of people waiting to order which impressed me. The ambiance is very comfortable as well as the speed at which I found myself at the front of the line. The menu is filled with mouth watering dishes, and the bakery shelves have a wide variety of baked goods. My breakfast croissant, fruit salad, and coffee were excellent. I've never had a better breakfast sandwich. When I'm in the neighborhood I won't hesitate to stop by for another fantastic meal. PJ Whitmarsh

Karen's bakery has been in Folsom for over 20 years and I would come here when I lived here. All the food is phenomenal!! Today I had the petite breakfast, scrambled egg was perfectly cooked, not dry and not 'wet' just the perfect point. Their bacon is thick and cooked to the perfect bendable state, not crunchy and not 'limp'. The fruit is fresh and so tasty. You have your choice of coffees, I chose dark roast. Just as good today as it was 20 years ago.

My friends and I like to come here for food and coffee after running on the nearby trail. So far I have tried the avocado toast and breakfast burrito. Service is fast and friendly even when busy. Would bump it to 5 stars but it's a little pricey here, food is expensive these days so it's nothing crazy but still. I love the outdoor seating on a nice day. Definitely try this place out.

Karen's never disappoints. Beautiful variety of baked goods. My guy and I split the stuffed brioche breakfast sandwich and it was delicious and unique. The chai lattes were flavorful and topped with a pretty cinnamon leaf pattern that just begged to be photographed. Normally quite busy with pretty long wait times, but today was a bit slow (especially for Sunday)-- no complaints here! Service was friendly and attentive.

Another outstanding meal! We've been going to Karen's since they 1st opened, and they were located in Orangevale (my parents lived down the street and used to give Karen some of their lemons haha). Everything always tastes so fresh and great quality. I love their granola too, which is homemade and I recommend getting it with their yogurt & fruit, so good. Their sandwiches are always amazing. Today I had the grilled chicken sandwich. My Mom had the quiche. The quiche is very delicious. The sandwich was huge, had to bring half home, and it came with wedge fries, which were piping hot. We also got some chocolate chip cookies ($3.25) to go, also delicious. I keep eyeing the tuna sandwich in the display case. It is humongous as well, with large slices of heirloom tomatoes (next time, getting that!).

I have only been here once, when visiting from out of town. We came for a Sunday brunch. It was delicious! There was a line out the door, for you to order at the counter. There was a variety of pastries and baked goods that looked scrumptious! My friend bought a decorated cookie for her granddaughter that was coming over. They also sold some candles and sparklers with numbers. What I liked: 1) The food was fantastic! I had the Eggs Benedict for $21. It was full of flavor! I had recently had that same dish at two other restaurants in the past few months, and this was the best! My friend got Eggs Florentine for $19, and it had a lot of fresh vegetables, and was very aesthetically laid out on the plate, and she loved it. My other friend got the avocado toast, and was not raving about it, but seemed to like it. I also tried a Lavender Latte with Oatmilk. I never order lattes, but had tried my friend's the day before from someplace else that was delicious. Mine, at Karen's Cafe, was too strong a coffee flavor for me, but I don't like strong coffee, so it is likely just a matter of preference. It was quite pricey for the latte, as, even though I didn't order it as a special, (it was listed on the menu board as a Lavender Latte), they charged an extra dollar for the Lavender, and another dollar for the oatmilk, so it was approximately $8 for the coffee that I didn't really even like. So, my order was $30, which is a bit high for breakfast, but it was, overall, very tasty. There were also some glasses and water in a self-serve area, with thinly sliced lemons that was also nice to be able to get when you wanted. 2) The atmosphere was very enjoyable. We sat outside, and it was quite pleasant. The wind wasn't hitting us, as it was when standing in line outside the restaurant on the other side. The tables were very nicely spaced, so that you are not in on everyone's conversations. It was a bit noisy, but we could hear each other talk. Several people had their dogs with them on the patio. Several people had babies with them. It was a nice place to people watch, enjoy a good meal, and nice weather. There is a single restroom that you might need to wait in line for. 3) Service: We had to wait a while for our meals. I was mid-way through my latte, along with my water, by the time my meal came, but there were a decent number of people eating there on a Sunday, and we were not in a hurry, so we were fine. If in a hurry, especially on a weekend, you could just pick up a pastry and run. One of the waitresses told us that the crowd level is very dependent upon the weather. During good weather, people flock there. Other days may be very low in customers. 4) Cost: it was a bit on the high end. If ordering a coffee or tea drink, I might ask the price, as there seem to be add-ons, but that is what Starbucks does, as well -- just to be aware, in case you are budget-conscious. Even so, my meal was scrumptious, so paying a little more was okay to have such an enjoyable meal. I would definitely come back if in the area. The stuffed Brioche Sandwich sounded delicious, and I took a photo of one at a nearby table, but wasn't quite sure what a brioche was, so ordered something I knew I'd like. But there were many tempting options. I would highly recommend giving Karen's Cafe a try!

This walk-up, counter-order bakery and coffee shop offers eggs, sandwiches, salads, and baked goods. After placing your order, you're given a number and can you get yourself water at the end of the counter and head across the busy dining area to the cream and sugar table if you want that for your coffee or tea. Indoor seating is usually full, but there are several outdoor tables available as well. When we visit with our group of five, we typically manage to find a table within a reasonable wait time before our meal arrives. However, the staggered delivery times for meals is a problem. Both times and I have come if somebody in our party ordered eggs they end up getting their food delivered after people who have ordered avocado toast, or other items not requiring the area, have long finished their meal. This is a problem. I don't think I'd recommend bringing hungry impatient, children or elderly people here because of the inconvenience of the stagger delivery of the food and constant having to get up to check if they forgot about you or to get your coffee refilled, etc. but for young hipsters, it's a cool place .
